Many chrysalids have formed and the students have removed them from the cups and placed them into the jars. Inside the jars you will see the chrysalids hanging from the tin foil cover. The chysalids are a green/grey colour from afar but if you look closely you can see small gold spots. You will also see the rocks, leaves and sticks that the students have collected and added to their butterfly habitat.
No school tomorrow! Enjoy the lovely, warm long weekend!

MacLeod Park track meet notice went home today. It is only for runners. All parents are responsible for their own child’s rides.
The larvae are growing fast. Many of them are now full grown caterpillars! These capterpillars have been ceating silk in their cups. When you look closely you can see the stringy silk and the caterpillars hanging from the sides and tops of the cups. If you listen closely you might be able to hear the scratchy sound of the caterpillars crawing around.
The grade one students are learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. In the classroom we are raising butterflies. The life cycle stage that the butterflies are currently in are the ‘larva’ stage. The larvae and nutrient (food) were placed into several plastic cups. Over the course of the next couple of weeks the larvae will grow quite rapidly, producing silky strands that provide shelter and help them to move around the cup.
Dear Parents,
This week, the grade one class has started a new unit on the life cycle of the butterfly. We currently have butterfly larvae growing in the classroom. Eventually these larvae will form pupas and these pupas will need to be placed into glass jars.
Within the next week, please bring an empty glass jar (Mason jar, Jam Jar, Pickle Jar) to school. Lids are not necessary.
Please look for classroom pictures of the butterfly’s life cycle on the St. Catherine’s website.
Thank you,
Ms. Maria Canil
